Sinkholes in Guatemala City

Sinkholes in Guatemala City

My first thought was “holy shit”, second thought was “it must be fake or from a movie”, but the image comes from the Guatemalan Government’s flickr stream. According to an article on io9 there are three of these sinkholes that have a appeared following tropical storm Agatha. It doesn’t mention how deep the sinkhole is but based on the scale it looks pretty friggin’ deep. How do you fix something like that? My guess is that you don’t, but then what?

  1. god knows everythin…

  2. My first thought was that it was fake as well. It’s an amazing photo, not to mention a crazy thing to happen. I think I read that it was about 300ft deep. We had a local sink hole happen on our interstate across about 3 lanes, and it was no where near this, probably only 25ft deep or so, but they estimated it costing over $250,000 to fill it and fix the road. There’s no telling what this one here will cost when it’s all said and done.

    • Here’s my 2 pennies, its not real, anyways. I’ve worked in the architecture industry for over twenty years, now retired, and I’ve seen my share of sink holes created by mother nature herself and yes man himself (yes, the guy operating the crane or back hole)…

      Just my worthless observation..

      1. A hole that big and no spectators, not by-standers, not even on the roof…

      2. Look at the corner of those buildings overhanging the edge, no seperation, no stress fractures, etc.
